Before he gets all glammed up to play a transgender rock goddess in Hedwig and the Angry Inch this spring, Emmy winner Neil Patrick Harris will suit up for the 2014 Drama League's Musical Celebration of Broadway! Hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, the evening will feature dozens of stage and screen stars paying tribute to the How I Met Your Mother star, Broadway vet and Tony host extraordinaire. Co-directed by Michael Mayer (who will also direct Hedwig) and Johanna McKeon, the gala will be held February 3 at the Pierre Hotel in New York City.
In addition to Goldberg, guest performers at the Drama League's 30th annual gala will include Cady Huffman, Constantine Maroulis, Mark Kudisch, John Cameron Mitchell, Aaron Lazar, Norm Lewis, Katie Finneran, James Barbour, Donna Murphy, Lisa O’Hare, Kal Penn, Bryce Pinkham, Lauren Worsham, Becky Ann Baker, Kate Jennings Grant and Eddie Korbich. The event will also include an appearance by Project Runway favorite Tim Gunn.
“We are so overjoyed to usher in 2014 with Neil Patrick Harris," said Drama League Executive Director Gabriel Shanks in a statement. “But to have our dear friend Whoopi Goldberg as our host and the amazing assemblage of talent on stage is a wealth of riches. This year's event is going to be legendary." Nice How I Met Your Mother reference, Drama League!
The annual event will benefit the Drama League’s educational initiatives for promising young artists. Previous years’ honorees include Liza Minnelli, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Chita Rivera, Rosie O’Donnell and Terrence McNally.
